Update Time, Again

Yup, it’s update time again on this here blog. Not much happening in Lincoln; I’m retired, after all. But a whole lot has been happening in the Episcopal Schools in the Dominican Republic. Lots of achievements across a range of schools across multiple regions of the country.

Students took exams for the Language Olympiads. Awards have been awarded to champions in various scholastic competitions. Children have created presentations for a variety of national holidays. Elementary age delegates met in a model United Nations. Schools celebrated Earth Day. Teachers have been recognized for their excellent work. Senior classes had their pictures taken. Just an educational whirl in the Diocesan colegios.

Our Education Mission Team has begun preparations for our May workshops in Santo Domingo. Can’t wait to get there and to post blog reports detailing what happened.

Early in 2015 with retirement fast-approaching, I knew that my Golden Years must include lots of “giving back” for the many blessings I’ve received. Bob and Ellen Snow, long-time Episcopal missionaries to the Dominican Episcopal Church, invited me to the Diocese’s annual convention where I saw a joy in worship and an emphasis on community service that inspired me to “give back” as a missionary in La Republica Dominicana.

The national government launched initiatives to broaden and deepen the education that Dominican children receive. Faced with competition from public schools appearing all over the country, the leadership of the roughly 25 Diocesan colegios (private schools) dedicated themselves to improving the quality of the values-based education that students receive.

In 40+ years as a teacher educator, I developed instructional and curricular initiatives that the Diocesan schools apparently needed. The Episcopal church appointed me as a missionary, with duties as asesor (consultant) to the Junta de Educacion Diocesana (Diocesan School Board). With exceptional Dominican educational leaders and a team of mostly U.S.-based specialists, I’ve spent almost 10 years helping Dominican educators realize their goals preparing future citizens of an emerging nation.

This blog is a record of my work in the Episcopal schools of the Diocese of the Dominican Republic. You’ll witness the dedication and skill of my Dominican colleagues and the unqualified support for school improvement that Bishop Moises Quezada Mota provides.
